This guy (and the one from Dwhite’s post just below) is a box turtle! Fun fact: box turtles often live to be a hundred years old! Up until about 20-30, you can generally tell the age of the turtle by counting the rings on the shell (after 20-30 it smooths out and gets hard to count). This dude is something like 10-15 years old. He lives in my backyard. His name is Speedy Klaxton.

Well, now he stays pretty far away, but I do have a hilarious video of the first time they met...I'll try to find it.

I’d love to see that video.

Found this guy mowing the lawn, let him loose near the bay

Nice! Yeah, other than humans very few things pose a danger to these guys in their natural habitats, so with a little help, they can live incredibly long.

We have an ~15 year old Russian tortoise named Leafy (don’t comment, I came up with it when I was five...) who just sits in his enclosure in the kitchen being grouchy all day until someone takes him out for a bath...
(Not him, but similar...I have to see if I can dig up a few photos of him later...)

Yeah I think if I left him in my lawn my blue heeler would have messed him up.

Here’s a turtle we rescued while he was trying to cross a busy road. It’s time to have the talk with my son about setting him free.

I’ve had my Box turtle since I was 8. Her name is Enzo. I didn’t know she was a she when I was 8, but the name stuck.

There was a turtle in my driveway once. He was gently carried off to the side so I could get out.

Cool, man. Any idea what species? It seems juvenile, too.

Just a note. Most land dwelling tortosises filter their urine internally to meet their needs. Picking one up usually causes them to expel urine. This can cause death from dehydration.

Interesting. Although you should know, box turtles are not tortoises. They are actually land dwelling members of the pond turtle family (emydidae), not members of the tortoise family (testudinidae).

Did not know that. Are their habits the same as far as liquids?

Almost certainly not...tortoises are adapted to arid habitats, these turtles are used to pretty lush places. Water ain't scarce here.

I believe he is a wood turtle. Which is kind of strange since they are not normally found here in GA.
